What is waste?
1. Overview

As householders and businesses we all produce waste. Waste is defined as 'any substance or object....which the holder discards or intends or is required to discard.'
There is no definitive list of wastes.
Discard has a broader meaning than simply 'getting rid of' so even if you can use the material in some way or it has a value to another person, it can still be classed as waste. For example, scrap metal has a value to the scrap metal dealer, but it is still a waste.
